The Firefighting Hydra
Fix one fault, two more sprout
0Data teams haunted
17 of 20On the leaderboard
A many-headed serpent that nests in the pipelines, feeding on panic and cold coffee. Each time a head is lopped off in a hurry, it sulks, then returns with twin heads and a fresh grudge against the on-call rota.
Symptoms
- Urgent tickets outnumber planned work every single week
- The roadmap has not moved since the last quarter
- Same incident reappears under a slightly different name
- Fixes go live without tests, and nobody is surprised
- On-call rota is dreaded like a dentist appointment
Weakness
Stop lopping heads and burn the root: invest in automated testing, data quality checks and proper monitoring, then ring-fence time for prevention. Track the repeat incidents, retire the worst offenders first, and the beast withers by dawn.
Overheard in the corridor
- “Just patch it for now, we will tidy it properly later.”
- “Didn't we already fix this one last month?”
- “I can't look at that, I'm in the middle of an incident.”
- “Prevention work sounds lovely, but who has the time?”
